expand, move, and grow

these are some exploratory drawings for a freelance branding project i’ve been working on.

whether they will be used in any final product or not, i still like the shapes.

günter gerhard lange

parsons the new school for design
class: typography II
instructor: joshua darden
assignment: create a poster honoring a 20th century typographer

i chose the typographer günter gerhard lange, who worked on one of my favorite typefaces, berthold akzidenz grotesk. the commonly known typeface helvetica is actually considered to be a “perfection” of akzidenz. whether or not that is true, akzidenz was truly a highly influential sans serif typeface in the world of typography and design.

book series

parsons the new school for design
class: typography II
instructor: joshua darden
assignment: design two book covers and a page of text for each for a series of shakespeare’s play or poetry books. no photography allowed.

i believe i could’ve taken this project a lot further, but sometimes it’s good to stop and look. i did, and i liked it. the white border represents the books that would qualify as comedies, and the black border for tragedies. i’d love to have a shelf full of something like this. black, white, and typography. nothing more needed.

mapping against the sky

parsons the new school for design
class: typography II
instructor: joshua darden
assignment: create a typographic word mapped image or illustration.

this was a simple project, but i liked the result. i used a photo i had taken downtown nyc looking up at the sky through the buildings as a guide. very surreal.

color calendar

parsons the new school for design
class: typography II
instructor: joshua darden
assignment: design a calendar based on an observable and known cycle

this project brought one of my favorite results from the class. i chose to create a page for each week, and each week is represented by a group of pantone colors. the idea is that each week you would turn over or rip off the previous week, leaving only one group of colors viewable at any time. i love color, and i think it would be great to have a random reference like this to help generate ideas and creativity throughout the week and maybe even influence some decisions. the pantone information is listed on each day.

orange

parsons the new school for design
class: communication design 1
assignment: pick a color and represent that color using any medium you choose. the goal is to communicate the color.

besides the obvious reasons, i chose to mount a physical orange on a platform because it allowed you to touch, smell, see, taste (if you really wanted to) the fruit we all know as an orange. what better way to communicate the color which it is and is named? i enjoy simplicity.
